Ein ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) ist ein Invstmentfonds, der an der Börse gehandelt und meist passiv verwaltet wird. In der Regel bildet ein ETF den zugrundeliegenden Index ab. ETFs sind mittlerweile für fast alle Anlageklassen verfügbar. Man kann mittels ETFs in Aktien (Indizes), Edelmetalle, Rohstoffe, Anleihen, Kreditderivate und den Geldmarkt investieren. ETFs zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie keiner Laufzeitbegrenzung unterliegen. ETFs können börsentäglich zum aktuellen Preis gehandelt werden.

ETF für Privatanleger
ETFs ermöglichen es auch Privatanlegern, kleinere Volumina unter denselben Bedingungen handeln zu können wie institutionelle Investoren. Für Privatanleger jeder Vermögensstruktur bieten sich daher zahlreiche Einsatzmöglichkeiten von ETFs an. Neben Einmalanlagen in ETFs gibt es beispielsweise auch Sparpläne, mit denen man monatlich ETF-Anteile erwerben kann.
Weltweiter Marktführer im Bereich ETFs ist iShares (Barclays Global Investors) mit einem Marktanteil von etwa 50%. Das entspricht etwa 435 Mrd. US-Dollar an angelegten Kundengeldern in 330 ETFs und 13 Ländern. Der Gesamtmarkt für ETFs weltweit beträgt rund 862 Milliarden US-Dollar. (Stand: 2009)
